Recently published: Peach, Joy. The Descendants of William Hartwell, Concord Settler, 1636, Through Five Generations, Hartwells of America, Foxborough, Massachusetts, 2007 indicates that Priscilla and Elizabeth Wright, wives of John Hartwell, were not sisters, as referenced in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Volume 63, NEHGS, Boston, Massachusetts, 2009 p. 258 (Online database: AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2001-2013.) https://www.americanancestors.org/DB202/i/11728/158/143385477
Disputed Parents: The following indicates that Elizabeth was likely the daughter of Edward Wright Sr. and Elizabeth (Mellowes) (Barrett) Wright.
1: John Hartwell, husband of Elizabeth Wright, died January 12, 1702/3. [1]
2 February 1703: Peter Wright was appointed guardian to Edward Hartwell aged about 15 and Jonathan Hartwell aged about 13, children of John Hartwell. Those providing bond were: Peter Wright; Ebenezer Lamson and Ebenezer Hartwell. [2][3]
3 Peter Wright married Elizabeth Lamson in 1683, with the approval of his father Edward Wright Sr. and the widow Elizabeth Lamson. [4][5]
4 Peter Wright died at Concord in 1717/18 and wrote his will in January of 1717/18. In his will he names:
his wife Elizabeth
my cousin Elizabeth Hartwell
my sister in law Elizabeth Lamson, wife of Joseph Lamson
my brothers Joseph and Ebenezer Lamson
my sisters Abigail Shepard and Hannah Sparks
brethren Edward Wright and Samuel Wright
my sisters Martha Heald and Sarah Wheeler
my cousins Jonathan Hartwell, Elizabeth Hartwell, Joseph Wright, Lydia Heywood, wife of Josiah (note: Lydia is later identified as Peter's niece) [6]
5 July 8, 1726: In the above court settlement, the following (among others) were notified:
Elizabeth Hartwell, now Elizabeth Wilson, wife of Samuel Wilson
Discussion: Peter Wright was the son of Edward Wright Sr. Martha Heald, wife of Israel Heald, was the daughter of Edward Wright and Elizabeth Mellows/Barrett Wright and Peter Wright's sister. [7]
Peter Wright, son of Edward, married Elizabeth Lamson. Peter was chosen as guardians of John and Elizabeth (Wright) Hartwell's sons Edward and Jonathan. His heir, Elizabeth (Hartwell) Wilson, was the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Wright) Hartwell. In his will Peter Wright call's Elizabeth Hartwell (later Wilson) and Jonathan Hartwell his 'cousins' but in a later instance in the estate settlement, cousin Lydia (Wright) Heywood is clarified as being his niece, indicating the term cousin may have been interchanged with niece/nephew.
It seems likely that Elizabeth Wright, wife of John Hartwell, is the sister of Peter Wright and thus the daughter of Edward Wright Sr.
Elizabeth Wright, likely daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Mellowes) (Barrett) Wright, married John Hartwell at Concord, Massachusetts on October 23, 1682 [23: 8: 82] as his second wife.[1] John was born in Concord, Massachusetts on February 23, 1641 [23: 12m: 1640], son of William and Susan Hartwell. [1][2][8]
John Hartwell died of smallpox on January 12, 1702/3. [1]
His son Ebenezer was executor to his estate. He left no will. The estate inventory was valued at L 219.09.00, with 'just over L being the homestead and land holdings.[9]
In February, 1702/3, Peter Wright assumed guardianship of John's youngest sons, Edward aged 15 and Jonathan, aged 13. [3]
Widow Elizabeth Hartwell died at Concord on December 16, 1704. [1]
