Biography

Sarah Riddlesdale was baptized at Assington, Suffolk, England on November 16, 1623, daughter of Edward and Mary (unk) Riddlesdale. [1] [2]

Her father Edward died in February, 1630/1, and her mother, widow Mary Riddlesdale married second, John Wyatt at Assington on June 27, 1632. Shortly thereafter they emigrated to Ipswich, Massachusetts Bay Colony, New England with the Riddlesdale daughters, Sarah, Mary and likely Dorcas. [1]

Her stepfather John Wyatt, wrote his will on November 23, 1665, and in it he names his 'daughters', Sarah, Mary and Dorcas. [1] [3]

She married first c1642, Luke Heard. [1] Luke came to New England by 1639, when he was made a Freeman. [4] He was the son of Edmund Heard of Claxon, Norfolk, England. His mother's name is unknown. [5] [6]

Luke Heard died in September, 1647.[1]

Luke Heard left a nuncupative will which was proved on 28: 7: 1647 [September 28, 1647]

I give to the following:
  • wife Sarah, sole executrix
  • eldest son John L10, when he reaches age 21
  • son Edmund, L5, when he reaches age 21
  • my books should be equally divided between my sons
  • my sons should be brought up in reading and writing so they may choose trades
  • Witnesses: John Wyatt and Simon Tompson[7] [8]

His estate was inventoried by John Wyatt, James How and Thomas Howlett. {Ipswich Deeds: Vol. 1: leaf 33] [7]

On December 15, 1647, Joseph Bixby made a marriage agreement with Sarah, widow of Luke Heard. [9] [2] [10]

December 15, 1647 [15: 10: 1647]: Bond of Joseph Bexby (Bixby) and widow Sarah Heard fo L30 for the two children of Luke Heard, linen weaver, as the above parties intend to marry. Agreement is that the children will be taught to read and write, any by the age of 13, each will be apprenticed to learn a trade as ordained by Nathaniel Rogers, their grandfather Wyatt and Mr. Howlett. [7][11] [2]

Further, that any lands owned in Assington, Suffolk, England which were to be Sarah's after her mother's death, if not detained, will be solely Sarah's, and Joseph Bixby will have no right to them after their marriage. [Essex County Quarterly Court Files: Vol 1: leaf 95] [7] [11] [2]

Nathaniel Rogers and John Wyatt petitioned the General Court to fulfill the will of Luke Heard, due to the fact that Joseph Bixby is currently out of the country, with no estimate of his return. The court ordered an attachment to the estate of Joseph Bixby as a guarantee of the children's legacies, as the estate of Joseph Bixby has been 'so weakened'. [Essex County Quarterly Court Files: Vol 1: leaf 96] [7] [11] [2]

She then married second, Joseph Bixby. [1] Joseph was baptized at Little Waldingfield, Suffolk, England on October 28, 1621, son of George and Ann (Cole) Bixby. [2] [12] Joseph is thought to have emigrated to New England about 1638, but his name doesn't appear in records until the time of his marriage. [2]

Joseph Bixby had grant of meadow land and a house in Ipswich in 1650/1. They later removed to Rowley/Topsfield. These villages were adjacent and the bounds to set off Rowley had not been established. The decision to establish Rowley as a separate town was made by the General Court in 1685. A year later it was renamed Boxford. [2]

Joseph Bixby died at Boxford, Massachusetts on April 19, 1701. [13] [12] [10]

He wrote his will on November 11, 1699. And it was submitted to the court with son Joseph Bixby giving bond, on March 6, 1703/4. [10] [14]

In it he names:

  • beloved wife
  • son Joseph
  • son George
  • son Jonathan
  • son Daniel
  • son Benjamin
  • daughter Mary Stone
  • daughter Abigail [14]

His widow Sarah acknowledged the will with her mark. [14] [2]

The estate was appraised on April 29, 1704, and settled after her death. The values included, land given to son Joseph L32 ; lands given to son George L21; land given to Jonathan with housing - L 60; undivided land L25; in addition to the appraisal of household goods. [14] [2]

On January 17/ 1702/3, widow Bixby was dismissed from the church at Topsfield to the newly established church at Boxford. [2] [9]

Sarah Wyatt (Wyatt-6003) has incorrect LNAB. She should be Sarah Riddlesdale (Riddlesdale-61). Somewhat complicated merge: Sarah and her sister Mary Riddlesdale's father Edward Riddlesdale d. 1631, Assington, Suffolk, England and their mother Mary (Unknown) widow Riddlesdale m. 2nd John Wyatt (see Torry's, pg.844 for her 2nd m. to John Wyatt & pg.21 for her 3rd m. to James Barker acknowledges her 2nd m. to John Wyatt) John Wyatt adopted Edward Riddlesdale's children and names them in his Will addressing them as his children. John appears to not have had any natural children of his own. Profile Sarah Wyatt-6003 was created based upon this error in interpreting John's Will and assumed that Sarah and Mary were John Wyatt's natural daughters. Discussion at length in several articles [NEHGR 143: 213-220]. Please refer to profile Edward Riddlesdale for additional information.

Wyatt-6003 and Riddlesdale-61 appear to represent the same person because: Sarah Wyatt (Wyatt-6003) has incorrect LNAB. She should be Sarah Riddlesdale (Riddlesdale-61). Thanks to everybody who worked on this profile. It's very informative.

Wyatt-636 and Riddlesdale-61 appear to represent the same person because: Please merge Wyatt-636 into Riddlesdale-61. Her LNAB is Riddlesdale, father Edward. John Wyatt was her step father, thus the confusion with the last name. Thanks.

Riddlesdale-72 and Riddlesdale-61 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate profile of Sarah RIddlesdale, wife of Luke Heard and Joseph Bixby. Please merge Riddlesdale-72 INTO lower numbered Riddlesdale-61. Thanks.

Note: This is her stepfather John WYATT, not John Hyatt. These attachments existed prior to my adopting her profile. She notes under Caution - parents need to be removed, LNAB = Riddlesdale.

Chris, you've got Sarah attached to the wrong Hyatt. Actually, she should be detached from him completely. Anyway, the John Hyatt here is the Virginia settler, not the Ipswich, MA man.

Wyatt-636 and Wyatt-157 are not ready to be merged because: This woman is most likely Sarah Riddlesdale and her LNAB needs to be addressed. This was posted on G2G PGM and has not been resolved.

This is 1 of 3 profile's for Sarah, 2 with her first husband Luke, and 1 with her second husband Joseph Bixby.
