The son of Thomas Wyatt and Margaret Grandie, Richard Footner Wyatt was born in Westminster, London on 31 Aug 1833. He was baptised at St james, Westminster on 13 July 1834. [1]
The 1851 census shows him living with his mother at 32 Broad Street, Soho, London.[2]
It is not clear what prompted Richard Wyatt to emigrate to South Africa as a young man. It is interesting to note that Broad Street was at the epicentre of the cholera outbreak of 1854, and it is possible that this it what prompted the move.[3]
Occupation
His occupation is given as Porter in the 1851 census.[2]
Farmer - Richard and Sarah Wyatt were farmers at Aasvogel Kranz, Umgeni, Natal. They had 12 children as shown here. Two of them, Sarah Elizabeth and Alice, died young[4]
