From his tombstone, Lawson Berry "Berry" Wyatt was born on October 15, 1864 [1] in North Carolina, the home of his parents, Lawson Berry Wyatt and Mary "Polly" (Connor) Wyatt. His mother had passed away by the time of the 1870 Census where he was living with his father and brothers and sisters in the Brush Creek Township of Yancey County, North Carolina. [2]
At the time of the 1880 Census Berry was living in the Crabtree Township of Yancey County in the household of Jessie Wilson and working as a farmhand. In the adjacent household was his older brother Amos Wesley Wilson living with his wife, Cordelia (Wilson) Wyatt and her family. [3]
Berry married Louisa Wilson, daughter of Edward and Nancy Wilson, on August 17, 1885 in Crabtree. [4] They remained in the Crabtree Township where Berry farmed. At the time of the 1900 Census they had six living children, all still in the household, and one deceased. There were a number of other family and extended family in the area. [5] By the time of the 1910 Census they had had two more children. [6] They were living with their three youngest sons in 1920 in Crabtree where he farmed and two of his sons worked in a clay mine. [7]
Their children were:
Berry's wife, Louisa, passed away in 1926 and in 1930 he was living in Crabtree with his youngest son, Arvle and Arvle's wife Belva. They were both miners in a clay mine. [8]
On August 15, 1930, Berry married again to Bonnie (George) Robison in Celo, Yancey County, North Carolina. [9] They were living in South Toe Township, in Yancey County in 1940, in the same place they lived in 1935. They were in a home they owned valued at $200. The Census indicates that he had only a first grade education. [10]
He died on September 2, 1944 and was buried in the Wilson-Rector Hill Cemetery in Double Island in Yancey County. He shares a tombstone with his wife, Louisa. [1]
