Biography

Birth and Parents

Henry Wyman was born in Illinois.

Henry Purkitt Wyman, the first son and second of eight children of Edward Wyman and Elizabeth Hadley was born on 25 October 1841 at Hillsboro, Illinois.

In 1860, Henry (19 years, born at Illinois, occupation Salesman) was living with his father, Edward (45 years, occupation White Lead & Oil Manufacturing) at St. Louis, Missouri along with siblings Martha (19 years, born at Maine), Ella (17 years, born at Massachusetts), Charles H. (15 years), Walter (13 years), Frank (11 years) and Florence (6 years) all born at Missouri, as well as Fanny Holmes (19 years, born at Illinois, occupation Governess), Margaret Conner (26 years) and Lizzie O'Neil (24 years) both born in Ireland and both employed as servants.[1]

Occupation

Based on census records and information gleaned from family histories, Henry started at the age of 17 in a wholesale grocery house (1858-1861). He worked for a number of years for the United States Customs Service as a special deputy surveyor of St. Louis from 1867-1880. He then became the Secretary and Treasurer of the St. Louis and Mississippi Valley Transportation Company from 1880-1893. In 1904, he became the assistant postmaster of St. Louis. His brother, Frank, was the Postmaster.[2][3]

Marriage and Children

Henry married Anna (alias Annie) Eliza Leigh, the daughter of Edwin and Susan (Scollay) Leigh on 29 October 1863 at St. Louis, Missouri. [4]They had three sons and one daughter born at St. Louis, Missouri:

  1. Edward Wyman (b. 1867; d. 24 Jun 1919, Chicago, IL),[5] m. 16 Oct 1901 at Kings, NY, Maude Louise Meyer (1879-1918)
  2. Ella Wyman (b. 1868),
  3. Leigh Wyman (b. 20 Feb 1872; d. 12 Sep 1960, San Francisco, CA),[6] m. say 1899, Fanny Fern Clapp (1879-1958)
  4. Hadley Wyman (b. 1874; d. 1893).

Census Records for 1870, 1880 and 1910

In 1870, Henry (30 years, occupation Custom House Officer) and Annie (28 years, occupation Housekeeping) were living at St. Louis, Missouri with their children Edward (5 years) and Ella (2 years) and two domestic helpers Mary Henson (21 years, from Denmark) and Resina Cordy (16 years, from Missouri).[7]

The 1880 census shows that Henry (39 years, occupation Customs House Bookkeeping Clerk) and Annie (38 years, occupation Housekeeping) were still living at St. Louis, Missouri with their now four children Edward (15 years), Ella (12 years), Lee (8 years) and Hadley (6 years) as well as a domestic servant Lizzie Koopmann (20 years of Missouri).[8]

The 1910 census indicates that Henry (68 years, occupation Real Estate Agent) and Annie (67 years) were living at St. Louis, Missouri with a domestic helper Anna M. Richter (25 years from Missouri).[9]

Death and Burial

Henry Purkitt Wyman, widower since 1915 died on 13 December 1922 in his year 83rd year at Brooklyn, New York.[10]He is buried in the Bellefontaine Cemetery at St. Louis, St. Louis City, Missouri.[11]Henry's estate files went through probate in Surrogates Court at Kings County, New York in 1923.[12]

Research Notes

  • Henry Purkitt Wyman is the uncle of Elizabeth Hadley Richardson, the first wife of Pulitzer prize winning author Ernest Miller Hemingway. She is the daughter of his sister, Florence (Wyman) Richardson.
  • Brother, Walter Wyman, MD, served as Surgeon General of United States Public Health and Marine Hospital Service from 1902 until 1911.
  • Henry's wife, Anna (alias Annie) Eliza Leigh was the sister of Martha Leigh, who was his father, Edward Wyman's second wife. Thus, Henry was both brother and uncle to Edward and Martha's son, Arthur Leigh Wyman.
