↑ Wyman was initially certified as the winner of the 1974 election, a recount deemed John A. Durkin the winner by ten votes. However, Wyman demanded another recount in which he prevailed by two votes. Cotton resigned on December 31, 1974; Gov. Thomson appointed Wyman to the seat for the balance of the term ending January 3, 1975 to give him a leg up in seniority. Durkin appealed to the US Senate which refused to seat either candidate resulting in the seat being vacant January 3, 1975 – August 8, 1975. A special election was agreed upon and Cotton was appointed in the interim. Durkin won and was seated September 18, 1975.
