Biography

Margaret Wynn was the daughter of Maurice Wynn of Wydir and Siân Bulkeley.

Her mother Siân died when Margaret Wynn was young, and her father marred second, Katheryn of Berain to become hervnll

Margaret Wynn was married in a child-marriage to her step-brother Thomas Salusbury (or Salisbury) on 20 September 1574. They had one son John, who died as an infant, and a daughter Margaret who was born in February 1586 and eventually inherited Berain.

Early Life

Her mother died when Margaret Wynn was young. Sometime before January 1573, her father married her step-mother, Catrin ferch Tudur ap Robert Fychan. She was also known as Katheryn of Berain and Mam Cymru, the mother of Wales. She was the mother of Thomas Salusbury who eventually married his step-sister, Margaret Wynn.[1]

Her father, Maurice Wynn died on 18 August 1580.

Marriage

A child marriage between Katheryn of Berain's son Thomas Salusbury, and Margaret, daughter of Maurice Wynn by his first wife, was arranged in 1574. This led to trouble over the wardship of Thomas, who upon the death of his grandfather (18 March 1577/1578) became the ward of the earl of Leicester, who, however, gave his consent to the completion of the marriage agreement.

Family

Margaret Wynn and Thomas Salusbury had one daughter as follows:

  1. Margaret Salusbury, born about 1585/6.

Research Notes

In 1739, John Reynolds of The Scripture Genealogy said, "Sir Thomas Salisbury, Son of Sir John, Married Margaret, Daughter to Morris Wynne of Grudur, and had Issue one Daughter. This Sir Thomas Salisbury, was Executed for Treason in Lincoln's-Inn-Fields, the 21 of September, in the Year of Our Lord 1587, and in the 29th Year of Queen Elizabeth's Reign."[2]

The common belief from the genealogical websites on the internet is that Margaret Wynn married Sir John Salisbury, but it seems to be the misunderstanding or inadequate reading on the part of an unknown previous genealogist who thought Sir John Salisbury married her, and it is more likely a wrong suggestion, made by Ancestry website for the inexperienced genealogist to add Margaret Wynn as John Salisbury's wife on the family tree. It was how it caused the confusion for our research.

However, the 1739 source is elucidating that Margaret Wynn did not marry Sir John Salisbury, but she actually married his son, Sir Thomas Salisbury.

Do you have a source for the death date? Other sites have her death as 1616 and therefore was not William's mother.
