Biography

John Yates was born before 1631, as he was married about 1649 and would have been at least 18 at the time. John married a woman named Mary (maiden name unknown) who was born about 1628.[1] Their son John Yates Jr. was born in Duxbury, Massachusetts on 15 Aug 1650. The family moved to Eastham, when John Sr. died in 1651, before June 8th.[2][3]

Research Notes

Based on a lack of immigration information, most researchers have assumed that he was born in the colonies.

Should this profile be PGM? John is not listed in the GMD. It seems his inferred arrival year would be about 1649. Perhaps the PGM assignment was the result of a merger.

Thank you Gregg. I see no support for PGM and removed it.

Barnstable is one of those areas where there has been extensive record loss. I'm going to start keeping a list of these when PGM removes them, as those which could be PGM if it weren't for record loss.

Up to 1650 he apparently was living in or near Duxbury in Plymouth Colony, since his son was born there. I don't think 'Barnstable County record loss' (which was mainly, but not exclusively, the land records, IIRC) would have had an impact on this one. Duxbury and the surrounding Plymouth Colony towns (pre-county era) had reasonably good record coverage between town, church, land, and court records. I think we're safe to remove him, and if an earlier record of his residence in the Colonies is found, he can be added back to the Project.

If it seems important to do so at any point, this profile could also be submitted to the Massachusetts Project for protection.

Yates-1342 and Yates-50 appear to represent the same person because: This is John Yates Sr. His death date is wrong, as no Europeans were in Massachusetts in 1615. The information on 1342 is more accurate. Please merge. Thank you.
