Name
Parhatteny Yates or Powhattan, commonly pronounced by family Parhatteny, was a slave from East Virginia, held in Alabama with his family and then freed. He was a 'black Indian'. His slaveholder Alfred Caldwell Yates was said to be his birth father who brought him from East Virginia to Washington, AL and then to Choctaw County, AL. He lived and worked on then Allen Caldwell Yates Plantations, Choctaw County. Met and married his wife Dicy Yates then their first daughter Amelia Yates was born there.
In 1900, at 70 he was married head of house in Bladon Springs, Choctaw, Alabama, USA. Alan Yates, Slaveholder. Born in Eastern Virginia of Powhatan Indian heritage.[4]
