Mahala Yates was born about 1818, the daughter of Williams and Elizabeth "Betsey" (Lower) Yates. She married Christian Burger sometime before 1843 when their first child was born. She is mentioned as, “Mahala, wife of Christian Burger, of Clarendon, Orleans County” in a legal notice concerning the estate of her grandfather, John Lower of Manlius, New York. [1]
Christian and Mahala were in Hindsburg, the Town of Murray, Orleans County as early as 1850. [2] They had seven children: Maria, John, Isaac A., Dewitt, Phoebe, Esther Arvilla, Sarah C. Burger. [3]
Her husband was a boatman on the Erie Canal. In 1864 he enlisted in the 8th NY Heavy Artillery and served during the Civil War. In September, 1871, Christian Burger was crushed during an accident in Rochester, New York. He died as the result of his injuries on September 14, 1871. [4]
Mahala remained in Hindsburg. In 1891, she was granted a pension of $8/month for her husband's service. [5]
She died March 22, 1899 at Dunning’s Landing in Yates County, NY, while staying at the home of her son, Dewitt. [6]
She may be buried near her husband in the Pierce-Smith Pioneer Cemetery, Murray, Orleans County, NY.
