Biography

Anthony Yaxley was the son of John Yaxley and his wife Elizabeth Brome. [1]

See the Research Note below for the basis for the estimated birth year.

In 1538 Anthony Yaxley, esquire, was suing Henry Watson, of Rykynghale Superior, chaplain, in the court of King's Bench for defamation. The defamatory quote: "Anthony Yaxley kepyth a house of bawdry."[2]

The visitation of Suffolk of 1561 gives his wife as Elizabeth, daughter of John Garneys of Kenton, Suffolk; his sons as Richard, William and Robert; and his daughters (and their husbands) as Mary (George Waller), Katherin (John Lanye), Elizabeth (Thomas Sherman), and Anne (Thomas Holbeach). [3]

Anthony died in 1558 and his will is held at the National Archives as PROB 11/42A/3.

Research Notes

At an Inquisition Post Mortem held on 20 May, 21 Henry VII (1506) following the death of Anthony's father, John, his will was shown to the jurors. He named his wife Elizabeth; his sons Thomas, Anthony, Christopher and James; and his daughters Elizabeth and Jane[4]; and his brother Robert. Thomas, the son and heir, was aged 24 years and more; James was apparently not yet of full age.[5] This would put Thomas' birth about 1482. It is unclear where the daughters fit in to the sequence of children, Anthony could have been the second, third or fourth child. On this basis the date is estimated at 1485.

It seems that Thomas may have died without issue as the visitation of 1561 names Anthony as the son and heir. It also has the daughters as Mary and Elizabeth.[3]
