Biography

Joan was born in 1532.

She was the second wife of William Levett of Harewood.[1] "A Chancery proceedings was begun by his oldest son, Mathew, in 1570 [son of the first wife Anne]. "Levett v. Levett, Series 2, Bundle 116, No. 40." It recites that by his second wife, William Levett, of Harewood left four sons, Richard, William, Percival, and Charles".[2]

It is likely that Joan was a widow when she married William, her father being John Jeffrey of Fewston (see notes).

She passed away in 1569.

Research Notes

The will of John Jeffraye of Fewston 1542 mentions "my doughter Jenett, Richarde Inglonde wyffe".[3] Seven years later, John's widow Margaret left a will dated 8 June 1549 which makes no mention of Jennet but refers to "my son in law William Levett".[4] Jennet was a common version of Joan and it seems likely that Richard Ingland had died and Joan remarried. There is a probate for Richard Ynglande of Pool, Otley, granted 27 November 1543.[5] Fewston is a small hamlet about 10 miles from Harewood and William Levett is known to have held land there.[6]

The birth date has probably been estimated from the marriage to William but will be earlier if there is a first marriage.

The date of death given is the date of William's administration.[7]
