He married Jane Newman. William Presley, Gentleman, the immigrant, was the second Burgess from Northumberland and represented this county in the Assembly November 1647. Nothing is positively known of William Presely's ancestry. He was recognized as a man of ability and high character. William Presley may have come to "Chicakawane alias Northumberland" with Colonel John Mottrom. William had grant of 1,150 acres of land in Northumberland, County, Virginia, in 1649. He was a justice of the County Court from 1650 to 1652; he was sheriff in February of 1653.54; he was churchwarden in 1665; and he was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1648 and from 1651 to 1654. His will dated August 15, 1650, was proven January 20, 1656/57. CONT CONT William's and Jane's son was Colonel Peter Presely. Peter Presley was born about 1640, probably in England. Peter married Elizabeth Thompson, daughter of Richard Thompson and Ursula Bish, about 1660 in Northumberland County, Virginia. Peter Presley held the title of Justice. He bought 300 acres (formerly belonging to George Colclough), patented 1664, and 500 acres on Chickacone River in 1670. William and Peter Presley in 1666 patented 2,700 acres in Northumberland County. CONT CONT Colonel Peter Presley acquired the title of colonel from serving in the militia. Peter had large grants of land in the county and was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1677, 1684, 1691, and 1692. Colonel Peter Presley's will was proven April 19, 1693. He married Winifred, daughter of Colonel Leroy Griffin and his wife, Winifred Crobin. CONT CONT Their daughter and heiress, Winifred, married Anthony Thornton, and was the mother of Colonel Presely Thornton (born 1710) of Northumberland House, Councilor, 1760. John Edwards patented Northumberland House in 1652, and it passed from him to the Preselys. CONT CONT Peter's and Winifred's second daughter married William Boydston in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Their son, David Boydston, was born May 2, 1726, and died August 3, 1811. He married Mahala Snow, daughter of John Snow and Elizabeth Hudson, on June 1, 1746. Their son, James Boydstun, was born September 23, 1747, near Paisley, Green County, Pennsylvania. James Boydstun married Mary Pruitt on June 15, 1761. An early history of Talbot County, Maryland, states that Richard Thompson was given Poplar Island by William Claiborne. In 1639, he returned home from a trip to find his entire family of nine massacred by the Indians. Richard was forced to move from Poplar Island by Lord Baltimore in his dispute over the property with William Claiborne. Richard was an assistant to William Claiborne, Secretary of the Virginia Colony. William Claiborne was the son of Thomas Claiborne, second husband of Ursula Bish's grandmother Sarah (Smith) James. Richard married Ursula Bysshe (Bish). CONT CONT Richard's daughter by Ursula Bish, Elizabeth Thompson, married Peter Presley. Ursula Bish or Bysshe married Richard Thompson, John Mottrom (Mottoone or Mattone) and George Colclough. She seemed to hold her own quite well in the men's world of her day. She was a niece of William Claiborne, a man quite disliked in Maryland for his opposition to the ownership of Kent Island by Maryland instead of Virginia. Ursula Bysshe had a brother who was the ancestor of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.
