Some time between 1900 and 1910, Andrew's father disappeared from the scene and his mother moved to Missouri with her second husband. (see research notes) In the 1910 census, Andrew was boarding with the family of a teamster in Jackson, Missouri, listed as a "name caller" at the depot. I presume that this would be the equivalent of the modern clerk stationed at the information desk.
By 1920, he had moved back with his mother and he was working on his stepfather's farm.
Research Notes
The above scenario doesn't match sources. The young man in the 1900 census was born in 1879 in Illinois & his mother was born in 1854.

In the 1910 census, the step-son living in the home of Charles L. Penn was born in 1893 and his mother was born in 1870. Those years are far to much of a spread to be considered reasonable.
