Biography

John Young was born about 1823 in Attercliffe, Yorkshire, England.

John Young married Hannah Mellon(?) sometime before 1851.

In 1851 John Younge (age 28, Silver Smith) lived at Attercliffe Road in Brightside Bierlow, Yorkshire with his wife Hannah (22), sister-in-law Mary Ann Mellon (16, Silver Burnisher), and lodger Henry Woodward (20, Stone Mason).[1]

John and Hannah separated at some point.

John Young had a family with Jacobina Stuart, but it does not appear that they were ever legally married. The births of their children were officially registered with the surname Stuart. It seems most likely that John and Hannah had not legally divorced, leaving him unable to marry Jacobina.

John and Jacobina had six children:

  1. Elizabeth (Stuart) Machin (1855-)
  2. Walter Stuart (c1859-)
  3. Rose Ann Young Stuart (1862-)
  4. Emma Young Stuart (c1867-)
  5. John Young Stuart (1870-)
  6. Charles Henry Young Stuart (1873-1932)

In 1861 John Young (age 38, Silversmith) lived at Creswick Street in Nether Hallam, Yorkshire with his wife Jacolinia (25) and two children: Elizabeth (6) and Walter (2), as well as boarder [Jacobina's brother] Walter E Stuart (23, Saw Maker).[2]

In 1871 John Younge (age 46, Silver Finisher) lived in Sheffield with his wife Jacobina (36) and three children: Rose Ann (8, Scholar), Emma (4), and John (0), as well as married daughter Elizabeth Machen (18, Butcher's Wife).[3]

John and Jacobina separated before 1879 (at which time Jacobina remarried).

Possible match for death registration: John Young passed away in 1883, aged 58 years. His death was registered in Sheffield in the last quarter of the year.[4] [5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
