John died in the Civil War. He enlisted in the Union Army on August 15, 1864 in Ironton, Missouri. He served with Company H of the 47th Missouri Volunteer Infantry. He was killed in action at Patterson, Missouri on September 20, 1864. The 1864-1868 list of qualified voters has John in Ironton as a Republican.
