Biography

LOSEY YOUNG born, Feb. 9 1809, on his parents farm on Brush Creek, Green Township, Adams County, Ohio, was given his mother's maiden name as a first name. He died, Feb. 23 1881,[1] age 74 years, 14 days, near Viola, Kan. and was buried there in Peotone cemetery (Tombstone date). His name on his gravestone is spelled Locey. John Losey of Mendham, N. J., his grandfather, in his will, spelled the name Losey. Losey Young was a homesteader in Indiana, Illinois and Kansas. Losey moved to near Viola, Kan. in 1857 according to Emma Jane Young (Elmer) Stine of Casper, Wyo. After the death of her mother, Emma lived with Losey and his family at Viola. Before going to Kansas, Losey sold, Jan. 26 1856, to his son Henry, land in Range 11, Will County,111. for $1.00. The balance of his Illinois property, 160 acres in Range 12 Tp. 33, he sold, Aug. 21 1872, to his son Newton (Joliet, 111. records).Losey Young married twice. He first married Christina Myers, in Lagrange County, Ind. On her gravestone in Pretty Prairie cemetery, Lagrange County, is inscribed, "Christina, wife of Losey Young, died,Oct. 23 1849, aged 44 yrs. 6 mos. 24 days." He married, 2nd., in Will County,Illinois, Christina Miller Gawthrop, a widow, on whose tombstone at Viola, Kan. is written: "Christina, wife of Locey Young, born, Feb. 23 1815, died July 8 1900, age 85 yrs. 4 mos. 15 days." She was a sister of Daniel Miller who married Elizabeth, daughter of Losey. Mrs. Gawthrop by her marriage to Losey became the stepmother of Elizabeth who was also her niece. Elizabeth Gawthrop, daughter of Losey's second wife by her first husband, married Benjamin Young (Rec. 32). Benjamin and Elizabeth Young emigrated from Will County, 111. to Kansas and later to Carthage, Mo. James Gawthrop, brother of Elizabeth, married Sarah Young (Rec. 87). Losey had five children by his first wife and one by his second wife.[2]

ii. Susan, b. 1834 in Ohio, married James Mudge, in Lagrange
County, Ind.
iii. Ahaz, enlisted for service in the Civil War, Aug. 6 1862,
at Wilton,Illinois and was mustered into service Aug. 30
1862 at Joliet,Illinois. He gave his age as 19; his occupation,
a farmer; nativity, Lagrange County, Ind. and his residence
as Wilton,Illinois. He was assigned to Company H, 100th
Infantry, and was killed in action, Sept. 19 1863, at Chicka-
mauga, Ga. (Adj. General, Springfield,Illinois).
iv. Henry, No descendants have been found. His purchase of
land from his father at a nominal sum is noticed above. He
was born in Ohio in 1842.
