Biography

John Young II was born on 7 May 1749 in the village of Cramond in Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of John Young I and Janet Hall. (His birth record states his birthplace as Cramond, Midlothian, Scotland). His baptism record says "instant", which indicates the child was not expected to live. Cramond was an historical village which is now incorporated into the city of Edinburgh.

In the year 1775, John went to America to fight in the Revolutionary war. He was under Banastre Tarleton, who was under Sir Henry Clinton, who was Commander in Chief of the British forces. John probably fought in the battle of New York City, but after his capture he changed allegiance and enlisted with General Washington in Winchester, Virginia.

In May 1775, in the city of Winchester, John married Elizabeth Oglesby, daughter of Alexander Oglesby and Hannah Haynes. From 1776 to 1784 Elizabeth had a child every year. Her last child, Alexander Young, was born in 1788. Elizabeth died this same year and was buried in Winchester, Virginia.
