George Young, Sr., was born 5 Dec 1755 in South Carolina, to Thomas Young, Esq, and Catherine Brandon (sister of Revolutionary War hero Col. Thomas Brandon). He fought in the Revolutionary War, serving with the South Carolina patriot militia, and was present at the battle of King's Mountain. He was brother to Revolutionary War hero Major Thomas Young. George Young Sr. married Elizabeth McCrary, daughter of Thomas McCrary and Letitia Brandon. Elizabeth died in 1800; he married the widow Alcey (Garrett) Whitmore c1805. [1]
The Revolutionary War service of George Young Sr. is recognized on a marble tablet, placed by the DAR, on the front inside wall of the Duncan Creek Presbyterian Church, Clinton, South Carolina. [2]
He passed away October 13, 1833 in Laurens, Laurens County, South Carolina. George was laid to rest in Duncan Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Clinton, Laurens County, South Carolina, United States. [1] The inscription on his headstone reads;
"Here lies the body of George Young, Sr., who departed this life on the 13th of October 1833, and died in the 78 year of his age. This is erected to his memory by his son George." His estate was probated in Laurens County, South Carolina on November 4, 1833. [3]
