Biography

According to a Find a Grave Memorial, Mary was born on the 21st day of December 1767.[1] She is the daughter of William Young and Sophia Chiffelle [Chissele]. At the time of her birth, her father owned land in Christ Church Parish in Georgia.

William Young of Savannah in the province of Georgia Esquire set his hand and seal to his Last Will and Testament on the 13th day of January 1776 making a bequest to his daughter Mary Young the house and lot near the Meeting House, purchased by me of William Sanders. Also a lot at Yamacraw, late the property of ___Marinier, purchased by me at the provost Marshals sales, and 500 acres of land in Christ Church parish, 150 acres of which I purchased also at the provost's Marshal's sales, the property of William Wall; also my Negro girl named Bess...when and as soon as she shall arrive to the age of 21 years. [2]

Mary married James Jackson in 1785. Marriages and Deaths in Georgia Colony, 1763-1800. Volume IV published in the Genealogical Quarterly Magazine recorded for the year 1785 reported on Thursday, Feb. 3: Last Sunday [Jan 30th] Colonel James Jackson to "Miss Polly Young," daughter of the Honorable William Young, Esq., deceased.[3]

On the 24th day of May 1803 Sophia Young of the city of Savannah in consideration of the good will and natural affection I bear unto my daughter Mary Charlotte Jackson of the city of Savannah do hereby grant unto her and her heirs forever all and singular of a certain lot of land and premises thereon in the plan of the city of Savannah by the number six (6) Frederick Tything Derby Ward whereon my late husband resided.[4]

On the 1st day of October 1805, Major General James Jackson set his hand and seal to his Last Will and Testament making several bequests to "my dear bosom friend and most deserving wife, Mary Charlotte Jackson, in whose affections and consolations I have ever found relief amidst the multitude of political and personal struggles in which I have been engaged." [5] Among other things, during her natural life, he gave devised and bequeathed "unto her the right of occupying any lot I may die possessed of whether built on, or not at her option. She shall also have the right of residing at Cedar Hill, as long as she lives, and enjoy exclusively the benefit and advantage of the House and out houses (Barn machine and Cotton houses with the plantation Negroe houses excepted) and garden & orchard even if she relinquishes her marriage settlement my wish being to render her comfortable and independent even of her children if either of them which God forbid should dare to oppose the happiness of the best of Mothers."

He also made bequests to her blood relations.[5] He noted Mary was entitled to a Wench Amoritta and her issue in her of her father the late Honorable William Young at the death of her Aunt Mrs. Dillon, wife of Robert Dillon. James made a bequest unto my aged and afflicted mother in law Mrs. Sophia Young be rendered as comfortable as her deplorable situation will admit, and I leave in trust for that purpose, the sum of five hundred dollars per annum for & during her natural life to be paid my dear wife, her daughter, for her sole and separated use. "I direct & enjoin my Executors herein named to use the utmost excerptions of the law, in prosecuting for and recovering all and singular the property real and person belonging either to the estate of my at one afore mentioned Father in law the late honrble. William Young or the estate of Doctor James Box Young his son and my wifes brother, the only trace of their or either of their blood, being to be found in my family – and it never was nor ever could be their wish to let their property go out of their own descent into the hands of strangers. Justice to my children requires it and a Family which shares one hundred thousand dollars each doth not need it."

The Savannah Georgia Vital Records recorded she died on the 22nd of December in 1807 at age 40 of Pleurisy, and was buried on the 24th from her plantation near Savannah.[6] Her memorial on Find a Grave shows she was buried in the Colonial Park Cemetery.[1]

Research Notes

Disputed Father: She is not the daughter of Isaac Young and Martha Bradley. This PM has carefully documented her parents with primary sources which are posted on this profile as well as the parents. The confusion comes from descendants of one William Young in Screven County, Georgia.

The William Young documented in Screven County, Georgia has been proven not to be the one who served in the first Provincial Congress, and was not related to this Mary Charlotte Young. WikiTree contributor and descendant of that William Young sent a letter to the DAR and copied it to this PM on the 11th day of October 2021 stating, among other things,:

"To Whom It May Concern:
I am trying to research my ancestor William Young. Virtually everything in print about him is incorrect. I did download the record that you have and it is incorrect. The History of Brooks County, Georgia by Folks Huxford is incorrect as is the Young Family History by Augustus C. Felton. These are not sourced documents. You have his military service listed as he was a member of the Council of Safety in 1775 and member of the first Provincial Congress. That William was the son of Thomas the wheelwright and Sophia Box. He was born about 1743 and was married to Sophia Chiffelle and died 18 Jan 1776 in Savannah. You can find all of his documentation at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Young-47966.
The William Young that died in Screven County, Ga. is also not the son of Isaac Young and Martha Bradley of Savannah. That William Young died before 1795. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Young-3176."

According to that contributor and descendant DAR has since removed that William Young.

The Lineage Book : NSDAR : Volume 161 cited as a source when this profile was set up has incorrect information on the birth of her father. Documented sources have proven he was not born in North Carolina. Please Note: The DAR no longer recognizes any application submitted before 1976 as "proof" nor should it be cited as proof. As of 1990, any application submission has to have every statement that is made on the application backed up with primary documentation See G2G discussion: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/91388/are-dar-and-sar-applications-reliable-sources
