Biography

Research Notes

There is a dispute over the parents of William Simmons (either John and Mary or William and Mary). His mother's maiden name is not known at this time, but this profile had been attached as his mother at one point. But so was husband William - who was born in Massachusetts. His profile has been detached from this one. (No marriage information was lost - there was none.) John and Mary Young's profiles have been detached from William Simmons because the parents were William and an unknown Mary. The will of 1677 is the will of Mary Simons, widow of Mary. "Mary Simmons of Burcher Swamp, Surry County, VA., whose will is dated April 16th, 1677 and probated May 7th, 1678, mentions son William and granddaughter Mary, and leaves legacies to John Rutherford and Francis Gregory, both of whom were of Bacon's men."[1][2]

The daily press links do not work. May one find the information cited at a new location? Thanks, Beth

it just opened for me. the page name/article title is "CHIPPOKES SETTLERS JOINED BACON'S REBELLION", author VIRGINIA H. ROLLINGS (Daily Press Columnist).

Relevant passage:

"Ensign William Simmons paid heavy fines, keeping his farm on Burcher Swamp. His relatives, John Rutherford and Francis Gregory, were also "rebels." Rutherford's tract, owned in 1623 by John Harris, extended across the Chippokes into Charles City (later Prince George) County. Rutherford had transferred part of the farm to William Heath in 1663."

Thanks; I have tried 3 browsers and they all say: "We are sorry, but the server is temporarily unavailable. Please try back later." I will again later. My husband and I have found documentary evidence to support that Mary and husband William Simmons were the parents, not John. I will add later. Working on Charles Simmons descendants for now. Thanks, Beth
