Isabella (Young) Rutherford was from a 'respectable' Irish family from Coleraine. Not much is known about her parents, but it was reported in her husband's memoirs that her father had died when she was still young. Her sister, Anne was married to Henry Moore, friend and biographer of John Wesley. She and her sister were devout members of the Wesleyan society and were referred to approvingly by John Wesley in his journal entry for 7 June 1778. Isabella was important enough to earn her own entry in the Methodist Archives, remaining active after her husband's death. A very literate woman, she was a correspondent of Eliza Fenwick. She also composed two beautifully written letters which were included in her husband's memoirs, published in 1807 by her brother in law, Henry Moore.[1]
Death
She passed away in 1817 while visiting her daughter in Leeds.
"On Thursday, aged 58, at the house of Mr. Joseph Dickinson, her son-in-law, at Grove Terrace, near this town, Mrs. Rutherford, widow of Mr. Thomas Rutherford, many years a respectable Itinerant Preacher in the Methodist Connexion: she was a woman of meek and quiet spirit, and exemplary in all her social and relative duties.'[2]
