Biography

Birth
No precise record seems to exist for her place of birth. Most sources cite Barton township as her place of birth and it is used here. At the time of her birth, her father 's farm was located in Colchester township, Essex County, in the far southwest of the province. Her birth occurred at the end of the War of 1812. During the war, that part of Upper Canada ended up under American military control. So her mother could well have been staying with her husband's family in Barton at the time of her birth.

Baptism
Sunday, June 12th, 1831. Rebecca Young, aged eighteen years, daughter of Peter and Hannah Young, born 25th February, 1814; baptized this day by me, John Miller.[1]

Marriage
She married her first cousin, Philip Wintermute, in Barton township on January 4, 1831.[2]

Family
In 1851, Philip and Rebecca were living on a farm in Oneida township with nine children and surrounded by their extended families. Among their immediate neighbours were the family of Thomas Runchey, whose daughter Eleanor was married to Rebecca's brother Edmond.[3]
By 1881, all the children had left home and Philip and Rebecca were still living in Oneida.[4]

Death
Rebecca died in Oneida township, Haldimand, Ontario on January 4, 1885. Cause of death was "bronchitis & cancer."[5] She was buried in Caledonia Cemetery in Caledonia, Ontario.[6]
