Possible Confusion

In February of 2017, with the permission of all known stakeholders, Lydia Young, the wife of Samuel Hatch, and Lydia Young, the wife of John Murdock, were merged. As I performed research to revise the merged profile, I discovered that it represented an impossibility, that the two men must have married two different women named Lydia. Here are some findings:

  • There are near-original records stating that the wife of John Murdock is Lydia Young.
  • The only near-original record that I can find states that the wife of Samuel Hatch is "Lydia ____".
  • Whether the Lydia Young who married John Murdock is the Lydia Young who was born in 1664 in Eastham is probable but not certain.
  • "Lydia" is a very common name in Plymouth Colony during this period.
  • There was more than one Lydia Young in Plymouth Colony, including a Lydia Young who married a Hatch (but not this Samuel Hatch).

Accordingly, in March of 2017, I revised this profile to separate Lydia Young (wife of Murdock) from Lydia ___ (wife of Hatch).

Biography

Lydia Young was born in 1664 to John Young and Abigail Howland. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Lydia Young married John Murdoch on 10 Dec 1686 in Plymouth, Plymouth Colony. [2] [5] [6] [7] Together they had eight children, during the period from 1687 through 1701, but only three survived to adulthood.

Childen born Plymouth:[8]

  1. John, b. 13 Dec 1687, d. 8 Jan 1687/8
  2. Janet/Jonat, b. 3 Feb 1689, d. 24 Apr 1697
  3. John, b. 8 Jun 1691
  4. James, b. 13 Jun 1693, d. 11 Mar 1693/4
  5. Robert, b. 14 Mar 1696/7, d. 28 Jul 1699
  6. Robert, b. 8 Oct 1699, d. Nov 1699
  7. James, b. 14 Jan 1694/5
  8. Thomas, b. 19 Nov 1701

Lydia died between 1701 (birth of last child) and 1719 (John's remarriage).[9]

An entry on FindAGrave states that Lydia Young Murdock died in 1719 and was buried at Burial, Hill, Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay. [10]

Research Notes

As mentioned above, Lydia (Young) Murdock is listed in Find-A-Grave and is shown buried at Burial Hill, Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. [10] Another entry on Find-A-Grave states that Lydia (Young) Hatch died 10 Apr 1724 and was buried in Falmouth. [11] The confusion is created because both entries claim that each Lydia refers to the daughter of John Young. The second one is incorrect because the daughter of John Young married John Murdock, not Samuel Hatch. Furthermore, the date of death given by the second would be five years after Murdock remarried.

The following comment represents an opinion on how to treat the confusion:

According to the name presented on profile, (Lydia (Young) Murdock) should be the only name sourced here. If the other "Lydia (Young) Hatch" entry on Find A Grave Memorial #59390421, is incorrect, then WikiTree profile manager(s) need to address this issue to the memorial manager on Find A Grave and bring it to their attention. I personally do not know anything about this person nor could not find any other reference source, or I would contact the memorial manager(s) myself. [12]

According to Howland's History, this Abigail married Young on 2 9m [November] 1678, a date not found in any records relating to Abigail and one too late to accord with her being called Abigail Young in her mother's will of 1674. Howland's alleged date is the one found in the Friends Records for the marriage of an Abigail Howland to Richard Keerby (see Abigail, widow of No.2, Zoeth Howland). The names of some of the children born to John Young and wife Abigail (e.g., Joseph, Henry, and possibly Robert) are Howland names and re compatible with a presumption that the mother was a daughter of Henry Howland; but if she were, Abigail was married many years earlier. A likely record of the marriage is the previously cited one in 1684. Extensive information is available on the family, both published and unpublished. A quick review of the Youngs in Plymouth Colony, made by the the authors Wakefield and Sherman, suggests that this John is the only Young in the colony likely to be Abigail's husband. Note: This is a decently sourced out report with lots of potential for further study.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Lydia by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Lydia:

I have removed the marriage of this Lydia to Samuel Hatch. The Lydia who married Samuel Hatch is now Unknown-359672.

I'm now certain that there are two Lydias and that Lydia Young married John Murdock while the other Lydia married Samuel Hatch. I will be making editing changes to implement this result.

I am now having second thoughts about merging the two records for Lydia Young. Here's why: She married John Murdock in 1686. He married 2nd Phoebe Morton in 1719, presumably after the death of Lydia. However, the other Lydia record has her marrying Samuel Hatch, circa 1694. I don't think divorce was possible, so this would suggest that the two Lydia's were, in fact, different people.

I agree that the two records refer to the same person. My research log shows that Lydia married twice--once to Murdock and once to Hatch. Because she is my direct ancestor, I am willing to take the responsibility to edit the profile following the merge.

Young-893 and Young-3426 appear to represent the same person because: Same events. Different husbands but same parents and siblings. Please merge and verify spouses.

Thank you
