James was baptised in the parish of Muiravonside, Stirlingshire, Scotland on 4 January, 1824[1]. His parents were Patrick Young and Janet Thom.
James Young married Maidlin Cowie in 1840[2]

In the 1881 Census James is a widow, living alone in Bank St, Slamannan.
(Census gives James' age as 25 in 1841 making a birth year of 1815 or 1816. He regularly claims to be born in Muiravonside so the only James there was baptised in 1824. Census ages were notoriously inaccurate. He could also have been baptised some months (or even years) after his birth.)
