Biography

Hartmann Zeller was born about 1711, in New York. No birth or baptismal record has been located. His namesake (and possible baptismal sponsor) is said to be Hartmann Windecker, the Palatine who was a deputy to Conrad Weiser and who founded Hartmannsdorf (AKA Neu-Ansberg), New York, on the Schoharie River, in 1712.

1744: Hartman Zeller is recorded in the account books of John Potts, a Pennsylvania merchant who sold supplies to many Tulpehocken settlers.[1]

25 Sep 1747: Hartmann Zeller sponsored Anna Barbara Conterman, daughter of Jacob Conterman, at Christ Lutheran Church in Berks County, Pennsylvania.

1748: Hartman Zeller, along with his father Heinrich and brother Johannes, were among the founding members of the Trinity Tulpehocken Church (today: Jackson Township, Lebanon County, PA).

15 May 1749: baptism of his son John Peter Zeller at Trinity Reformed Church.

20 Apr 1753: HARTMAN ZELLER was living "at Susquehanna" when three of his children communed at Host Reformed Church: JOHANNES ZOLLER, CATHARINA ZOLLER, the eldest daughter, and BARBARA ELIZABETH ZOLLER, the 2nd daughter.

~1762: He was paid a sum by the executors of the estate of Peter Lerew

1790: a Hardman Seller appears on the 1790 US census of Washington (formed from Frederick), Maryland with 4 males over 16 and one female.[2]

1800 US census shows household of Hartman Sellers, located in Conococheague Township, Washington County, Maryland, United States. The household consists of 1 male over 45, one male 25-45, and one female over 45. On the same census roll, probable relatives appearing are Jacob Sellers (6 in his household) and Jonas Sellers (5 in his household).[3]But note that Jacob and Joseph Sellers do not appear on the list of children below. A Jacob Zellers appears on the 1800 US census, in Elizabeth Hundred Township, Washington County, Maryland.[4] Perhaps that is him.

Vital Data

  • Father - Probably Johan Heinrich Zeller.
  • Mother - Anna Maria Unknown. She is often attributed as Briegal but no connection has been established to the Palatine immigrant George Briegel (Hunter Lists #84). She is also sometimes mis-attributed as an Anna Maria Briegal born in Holland, but this has been disproven.
  • Birth -NY Gov, Hunters subsistence list shows at least one child present in the household of Johan Heinrich Zeller after 31 Dec 1710, presumed to include Hartmann. This suggests that Harmann was born between 1 Jan 1711 and 25 Mar 1711, probably at West Camp, Columbia County, New York
  • Death - a1800, probably in Washington County, Maryland
  • Burial - location unknown , There is a virtual Find A Grave: Memorial #64940245, which shows much more info about the life of Hartmann.

Marriage and Family

It is fairly well established that Hartman married twice. The specifics of these marriages, however, are not well documented, including precise knowledge of his brides' names. [5] His first wife was (probably) Catherine Unknown, and his second wife was Anna Maria Unknown. The children of Hartman are listed in the will of eldest son John. [6]
