Intoduction

Colonel (honary title) William F. Zimmerman was born about 1763 likely of South Carolina. He had four sons and three daughters with Mary Ann Dozier between 1795 and 1815. He died on October 12, 1815, in Darlington, South Carolina, at the age of 52.

Research indicates he was more likely born in either Maryland or Virginia.
He served in the American Revolutionary War in a light cavalry unit organized in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the surrounds. His service includes time in South Carolina. He recieved 100 acres of land for his service from Virginia as a Sergeant. He apparently sold that bounty land and later went to South Carolinia where he bought land and settled.

BIOGRAPHY:
DARLINGTON COUNTY RESPONSE TO DECLARATION OF WAR (1812)
By Brian Gandy - Director July 13, 2018
https://dchcblog.net/2018/07/13/darlington-county-response-to-declaration-of-war/
On July 18, 1812, a group of Darlington County residents gathered to discuss the declaration of war. The following is a transcription of an article published in the City Gazette, September 11, 1812, found in the Darlington County Historical Commission’s Collection, which contains the results of that meeting.
Darlington Public Meeting
At a meeting of a respectable number of the citizens of Darlington District, at Darlington Court-House, on the 18th day of July, 1812, Col. LAMUEL BENTON[1], was called to the chair, and Col. WILLIAM ZIMMERMAN[2], was appointed Secretary.
Darlintonians Mentioned In Article
[2] Col. William Zimmerman was born in 1762. He married Mary Ann Dozier (died October 1, 1815) and had seven children. He was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, Representative from 1798-1800 (elected in 1800 but resigned); Sherriff from 1800-1802; Ordinary; Justice of the Quorum; and Senator from 1808-1812. In 1811 he was a part of the group in Darlington District petitioning the General Assembly to provide a system of free schools in South Carolina. In 1812 he served as Secretary of the Darlington Citizens Committee. He died October 12, 1815 at his residence in Darlington.

TITLE: Colonel
The honorable title prefix and style of "Colonel" is designated legally for various reasons by US governors in common law to citizens, employees, travelers and visitors within their states.[1]
The origins of the titular colonelcy can be traced back to colonial and antebellum times when men of the landed gentry were given the title to commission companies or for financing the local militias without actual expectations of command. This practice can actually be traced back to the English Renaissance when a colonelcy was purchased by a lord or prominent gentleman but the actual command would fall to a lieutenant colonel, who would deputize its members for the proprietor.[2]
The authority and distinction of the title of Colonel dates back to 1651 with the Virginia Company. Literally a colonel was recognized during colonial times as a head of the colony, everyone else was a colonist or colonial.
There were colonels of expedition companies, land companies, trading companies, county militias, farm communities, plantations and frontier forts. The only person above the colonial colonel was the Governor, this begins changing once the colonels during the Revolutionary War select and become the first US state governors, senators and congressmen under democratic principles.[1]

MILITARY:
So far no William Zimmerman has been found as an officer, let alone as a Colonel in the American Revolutionary War.
A William Carpenter who served in the American Revolution is likely the same person.
He “Likely” served under Captain (later Major) Moore Fauntleroy’s Third Troop of the 4th Continental Light Dragoon Regiment. - this from the JRC "Summary" report.
A William Zimmerman (Zeamerman, Zimmeron) of Virginia, enlisted on 23 Mar 1777 then again on 23 Sep 1778 for three (3) years. His military term of service would then expire about 23 Sep 1781. But on 20 Jun 1783 he is still on the payroll of the 4th Regiment of the Light Dragoons assigned to the Continental Line.
Later he was awarded 100 acres of land from Virginia for his service as a Sergeant. It would be beneficial to examine this land grant. - in progress Citations indicate that there are associated War Department records for this William Zimmerman (Zeamerman, Zimmeron). It would be beneficial to seek copies of this record. - in progress
Various Records indicate he served as a Corporal, a Sergeant and lastly as a Drill Sergeant.

LETTER: 1964 Arthur Louis Zimmerman Letter on Zimmerman Family 1964
Written in Texas

Excerpts from the "History of the Old Cheraws" (South Carolina) by the Right Reverend Alexander Gregg, formerly Rector of St. David's Church, Cheraw, SC, extending from 1730 to 1810.

Page 169: Tuesday, October 4, 1768. The Poll for the election of a Member of the Assembly for the Parish of St. David, in Craven County, South Carolina, was opened at the house of Mr. MacIntosh, and the following persons voted, Viz: (113 names listed, including James Dozier), Claudius Pegues, Esq., was unanimously elected a Member of the Assembly.

Page 172: New writs of election were sent up to the churchwardens, Feb 25, 1769, and the election ordered for the 7th and 8th of March, at the same places as in the former year. (Included were the following, who did not vote in 1768: Arthur Hart and John Perkins).

Page 197 Arthur Hart and John Perkins were listed as having served on the Grand Jury in 1773.

Page 225 South Carolina, Jan. 9, 1775. “It is ordered by his Honor, the Lieutenant-Governor, in Council, that the names of the Magistrates for the several districts in this Province be printed in the several Gazittes. The names of the Magistrates for Cheraw District, as published, were these, viz: William Arthur, Thomas Wade, James Lindlay, Henry Patrick, Claudius Pegues, Charles Augustus Steward, Thomas Turner, John Perkins, Arthur Hart, Alexander MacIntosh, Philip Pledger, and William Henry Harrington.” In this list of his Majesty’s Justices for Cheraws are found the names of some who had already become conspicuous from their opposition to the Crown.

Page 458: In the Memorable canvass of 1798, in Darlington, for the Legislature, a name appeared which has been destined to become distinguished in South Carolina. Samuel Wilds was one of four candidates. His competitors were Andrew Hunter, of Revolutionary note, Ezekiel Du Bose, just of age, and William Zimmerman. Mr. Wilds was then in his 23rd year, etc. Mr. Zimmerman was already a public man of prominent position, and young Du Bose, in addition to attractive personal traits, had the advantage of a very extensive family connection in his favor. He led the ticket followed by Mr. Zimmerman.

Page 460: The term count was now laid aside, and that of district took its place, which has since been retained. Alexander MacIntosh was elected sheriff of Darlington. The Commissioners appointed for building and repairing the several Court Houses and gaols [British variant for jail] were: For Darlington, Robert Ellison, William Zimmerman, Andrew Hunter.

Page 461: The dividing line between Cherterfield and Darlington had not, up this time, been run out. An act was accordingly passed at this session, appointing Alexander Craig, William Falconer, and Erasmus Powe, Commissioners on the part of Chesterfield; and Robert Ellison, Williamson, and D. R. Williams of Darlington, to establish said line.
On the 11th of April 1800, a very considerable shock of an earthquake was felt by many of the inhabitants on Peedee.
In the canvass of 1800 for the Legislature, another exciting contest took place in Darlington. Samuel Wilds, having been since at the Bar, was becoming more widely known, and being superior as a speaker to all his competitors, was elected without difficulty. William Zimmerman retained his seat. In the canvass of 1802, which was warmly contested, Alexander MacIntosh was returned for the Senate, in place of William Thomas, of Marlborough. William Zimmerman was elected Sheriff in place of Alexander MacIntosh, now in the Senate.
Excerpts from the Addenda to Gregg’s History of the Old Cheraws; Perkinds-Zimmerman-Keith:

Page 624: Extracts from a letter of Miss Elizabeth Zimmerman to the Secretary of the Pee Dee Historical Society: John Perkins, a native of Kershaw. Margaret Perkins, daughter of John Perkins, married first, James Dozier, of Georgetown.
There were two children of this marriage: Mary Dozier, who married William F. Zimmerman, and James Dozier, who died in infancy.
Mary Dozier Zimmerman had a large family: James Dozier, William F., John Perkins, Daniel, Eliza (Mrs. T. J. Flinn), Sarah (Mrs. W. R. Davis, and Malvina (who died in infancy).
Margaret [Perkins] Dozier, married the second time, Colonel Keith of Georgetown, and had two daughters, Lydia Keith and Harriet Keith. Lydia Keith married Timothy Dargan and had quite a large family: G. Washington, Jeremiah, Timothy, John, Julius, Edwin, Sidney, Theodore, Charles, and Mrs. Furman (Henrietta), and Mrs. Sims (Margaret).
Harriet Keith married Mr. Samuel Ervin, of Darlington, and moved to Georgia. They had one child, Harriet, who married a Mr. Burch. Mr. and Mrs. Burch had one child, Rosalie. Mrs. Burch died in Darlington at her aunt’s, Mrs. Lydia Dargan.

The tragic fate of Col Keith should be remembered. He was killed by his body-servant on his way from Georgetown to his home in Darlington. This occurred not far from the place were Mr. Mat Muldrow afterward lived. The murdered was burned near the spot where the deed was committed.
