Biography

Name also appears as Johan and John but Johannes should be correct Middle name may be spelled Frederic in places but Friederich should be correct Surname appears as Zimmermann (2 ns) in the passenger manifest (see link)

Sailed to America on the "Polly" from Rotterdam, Netherlands which landed in Philadelphia, PA on September 19th 1764 — his name can be seen in the passenger manifest

Since there is no Wolluria in Germany (or anywhere) it’s possible he was from Wallonia in Belgium.

According to PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN PIONEERS, in which the Original Lists of Arrivals in the Port of Philadelphia were published, Johan Frederic's name is listed as a passenger on the ship "Polly", which arrived into the port of Philadelphia in the year 1764. This date is also re-confirmed in the Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia of Dauphin County, Pa., 1896, by Runk & Company, pgs. 734 and 735. In a biographical "sketch" it notes, "John Frederic Zimmerman was born in Wolluria, Germany, and came to America in 1764, landing at Philadelphia."

"There is a warrant date of July 6, 1772 Paxtang Township, Lancaster County 125 Acres. Later Frederich moved north and settled in Armstrong Valley, southeast of Halifax, at a place later known as Yeager's Mill.

Family history notes that Frederich and his wife were buried in a cemetery at Guy Rutters farm, near "Rudy's Creek", known as Rutter's Farm Cemetery. Their graves were marked on rough stones on which place large oak trees have now grown up.

Mr. Zimmerman and family had in the early days great trials with roving bands of indians, who burned three times their cabin and took or destroyed their possessions. To escape the indians the family took refuge in a cave nearby on the banks of the Armstrong Creek."

John Frederic(h) Zimmerman was a founder and active member, as well as the rest of his family, of St. Peter's (Fetterhoff's) Evangelical Lutheran and German Reformed Church, as indicated from extracted church records.

A URW (unrecorded will not registered), dated 1790, can be found at the Dauphin County Courthouse, Harrisburg, PA, in a WILL INDEX for the period 1785-1860, where Frederich's wife's first name is indicated as Anna Maria.

Additional Research

gives place of birth as Wollum, Märkisch-Oderland, Brandenburg. I’ve tentatively eliminated him as a son of Christian Zimmerman who m Elizabeth Albrecht. They had a Frederick (Zimmerman-32) of Culpeper, was part of the Germanna Settlements. Every tree on ancestry has those parents which clearly is wrong.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Johannes by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Johannes:

Hi there, I've done a bit of research on Johannes as he is the direct ancestor of my grandmother Helen Mae Zimmerman, so I'd like to share it with you.

Here's a link to his grave which contains a bio. It says he was born in 1743 however I cannot read the picture of the gravestone to verify that date.

There is and never has been a German town named "Wolluria" however it is known that he emigrated from Rotterdam, which isn't far from Wallonia, Belgium, which had more Germans living there at that time than it does today. So my best guess is that he was originally from Wallonia.

His name appears on the ship's manifest of the "Polly" which sailed from Cowes (Isle of Wight) to Rotterdam to Philadelphia. Note that his first and middle names are abbreviated, however his surname was definitely spelled "Zimmermann" with 2 "n"s.

Finally here's the last link I found which includes the names of all 5 of his children including John who's said to have died in 1797. If you click the link to the "Next Page" it'll give you a much longer list of names for Generation 2.

Edit on Dec 12 2023, I see someone has edited this page to say he gives his place of birth as Wollum in Märkisch-Oderland, Brandenburg, Prussia, however I was unable to find a “Wollum” with a quick internet search. However I do see a “Wollup” in that location so that might be correct. Interestingly the words Wollum and Wollup both start with the same 5 letters as “Wolluria” where 2 of the sources I found say he claimed to be from.
