Biography

Hans Michael Zimmerman or "Michael" was born 16 July 1705 in Meckesheim, Baden, Germany. He was baptized in the local reformed protestant congregation when he was three days old^[1] and confirmed in 1720.^[2]

In 1727, Michael accompanied his parents, Andreas Zimmerman and Anna Elisabetha Müller, and five of his siblings to Rotterdam, Netherlands, where they boarded a vessel bound for America. They arrived in Philadelphia on September 18 aboard the ship William and Sarah.^[3] He was among the Palatines and other male foreigners aboard above the age of 16, who signed an oath of loyalty in Philadelphia on 21 September 1727 to King George II of Great Britain.^[4]

Michael married Anna Elizabeth Dodderer soon after his arrival in America^{[citation needed]} and they settled in what was then Philadelphia County, Province of Pennsylvania (present day Montgomery County). Already in 1731, his name was listed with his father-in-law's among the membership at New Goshenhoppen Reformed Church,^[5] where the baptisms of some of their children were recorded, such as Veronica's in May 1736.^[6]

Michael died (age 34) at home before March of 1740. In his February 1740 will, he had appointed his brother, George, and his brother-in-law, Bernhart, as guardians of his wife and five children (2 sons and 3 daughters).^[7] His exact burial place is unknown but is assumed to be in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. A land patent he had entered before his death was issued in 1741 to his two surviving sons.^[8] Since Michael's children were minors when he died, his estate wasn't settled until much later. By that time, his wife had remarried to Jacob Kurr.
