Biography

Jean Marie Abadie was the son of Francois Abadie and Catherine Despales.[1]

He married Azelie Aurelia Rivet, daughter of Pierre Rivet and Marie Scholastique Rivet, on 2 June 1860 in Raceland, Lafourche Parish.[1][2][3]

Their known children were:

  1. Marie Odilia Abadie, b. 8 Jul 1861
  2. Edouard Felicien Abadie, b. 18 Sep 1862
  3. Marguerite Sydonie Abadie, b. 23 Aug 1866

He may have been the Jean Marie Abadie who served as a Confederate private in Company 6, 2nd Regiment, French Brigade, Louisiana Militia, during the Civil War.[4] (But see research note below.)

He died before December 1877, when the record of his wife's second marriage mentions she was widowed.[5]

Research Notes

Other men of same name. There appears to have been several men named Jean Marie Abadie in Louisiana at the same time. There are at least seven different records for marriages, and at least two different deaths, in New Orleans alone. There are also immigration records for a "Marie Jean" Abadie from Germany through France to New Orleans in 1867 at age 19. This is all just to say, be careful about assigning records to this man based purely on the name.

Civil War service. There are similar issues with figuring out Civil War service records. There may have been three different men by this name serving from Louisiana -- two Confederate and one Union deserter. Or perhaps the Union soldier deserted over to the Confederate side. Without additional information to identify them specifically, it may not be possible to verify which service record belongs to this man.

  • Jean Marie Abadie, Private, Company 6, 2nd Regiment, French Brigade, Louisiana Militia, Confederate. (see bio)
  • Jean Marie Abadie, French Company of St. James, Louisiana Militia, Confederate. The company was organized of "French Subjects" in the parish of St. James.[6]
  • Jean Marie Abadie, Private, Company A, 1st Louisiana Infantry, Union. Enlisted 31 Jul 1862 at New Orleans, mustered in 2 Sep 1862 at Camp Williams, deserted from Algiers 8 Jul 1864. Age 32 yrs on 12 Jul 1865.[7]
