Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Leo Able is a part of US Black heritage.
Leo was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Leo Earl Able was born on 9 April 1896, in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, son of Elijah Able and Francilda Cairns Harwood. [1]

Leo was baptized when he was around eight years old as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A ward clerk recorded that the baptism had taken place, but no official record has been found. Leo was never ordained into the lay priesthood. This suggested that either church leaders were aware of his mixed race status, or he wasn't active in Church activity.[2]

Leo registered for the WWI draft in 1917. [3] He enlisted in the Navy on February 19, 1919. While the Navy was integrated at this time, there are are no records that suggest Leo was identified as anything as white. [4].

He died on 25 June 1920 of Nephritis while still in Navy service, at Mare Island, Solano, California. Leo was just 24 years old. [5] He was buried in Draper, Salt Lake, Utah, United States.[6] [7]
