Bevery Dandridge Acree was born about 1795 in Hanover County Virginia, the son of William Acree. [1] About 1797 or 1798, William Acree moved his family to Spartanburg District South Carolina, where he lived until about 1813. In addition to Dandridge, William had son Burton Acree, born about 1794, and daughter Margaret (Peggy). [2]
About 1815, William Acree and his children moved west and settled in Rutherford County Tennessee, where in 1817 Dandridge married Susannah Margaret Bowman, the daughter of Daniel and Susannah M. Horn Bowman. [3] Dandridge and Susannah Acree moved to Madison County Tennessee in 1822 and remained there until 1834, when they moved to north Louisiana. Dandridge bought 80 acres of land in Ouachita Parish Louisiana on 21 April 1836 and an adjoining 80 acres on 19 January 1837. His farm lay along Bayou D'Arbonne in the portion of Ouachita that became Union Parish in 1839, near the present-day community known as Point.
Bevery Dandridge Acree was elected to the Union Parish Police Jury from Ward 1 in the spring of 1841, and he served until his death. At that time, the Police Jury usually met four times per year. Dandridge was absent from only one session of the Police Jury during his period of service. As he lived 20 miles from the town of Farmerville, serving on the police jury was a serious commitment, as most sessions lasted several days (the distance is shorter today due to improved roads).[4]
Bevery Dandridge Acree died on 30 July 1844 at his home.[5] He was buried on the edge of his farm in what appears to have been his family cemetery. This family burial ground evolved into today's Acree Cemetery, now located near the community of Point, in southeastern Union Parish, Louisiana.[6] The death date of Susannah M. Bowman Acree is unknown, but it appears from the 1840 listing of Dandridge's household that she was still alive in 1840. She was not mentioned in his estate proceedings after his death, so she appears to have died sometime between 1840 and 30 December 1844.
The succession records of Union Parish, Louisiana prove the names of the children of Dandridge Acree and Susan M. Bowman alive on 30 December 1844:
