Dear Linda,
Wanted to get back to you on the Albert before you went to Lancaster Co.. I still don't have the address of Mrs. Hardman but know it is here somewhere. I think she was in Maryland but had gone to Lancaster to do the research using the Albert family bible to guide her. Maybe her work and address are in the Historical Society.
As you know these county lines changed and I don't have any idea as to who has those early records. I'm still wondering how Michael Heichel and Catherine Albert got over into Middleton, Dauphin Co.,
I don't know the location of the Albert land, only what Mrs. Hardman had in her records. I can't find her name mentioned on any of the web sites so she may not be on computer yet.
The tax records are under the name of Albert, Alvert and Albright. I think the line is rather confusing.
First, the Father of this family was Philip, and he stayed in Germany,
Son, Philip, the first one in this country, his name was Johannes Phillip Albert came on the ship Phoenix, from Rotterdam in Nov. 1752.
He first shows up on a tax list in 1758 and had 20 acres of land in Hempfield Twp. Three of them were cleared and 2 of them sown. He had one horse and one cow. By 1773 he was being taxed on 80 acres, 40 cleared and had 4 horses, 3 cows and 4 sheep.
In 1756 he married to Regena Doerr (various spellings) and some of the land seemed to come from her Father through inheritance. Her Father was John George Derr, mother Mary Catrina.
This 1st Albert to come into this country was named Johannes Phillip Albert. He had sons, John Albert, John Philip Albert and John George Albert, plus Peter Albert. They were born between 1759 and 1776.
It looks to me like any of the above could show up in census records or tax lists under the name of John. Very confusing. The first Phillip was born in 1734 and died in `1777,
When this first Johannes Phillip Albert died, 1777, Regena stayed on part of the land and she died in 1812. Oldest son John got the property when he turned 21, in 1780 and paid off the younger children.
In later years Regena seems to have traveled around to other towns to attend special services at churches.
John Philip Albert, the 2nd one in this country, was born in 1766 and died in 1857. He was called Philip also.
He married to Catharine Herschberger Easter week of 1794. She was the daughter of Jacob and Marie Catherine Hershberger . His will has the name spelled Herseberger, One son used the spelling
of Harshbarger and other spellings are Horseberger, Heerburger, Heneburger, Haisbarger, Hertzberger, Herschberger, etc. Jacob was born around 1695 and died Nov. 1762 in Colalico, Lancaster, Pa.
I don't know the location of the land but you may be able to identify the area of the Alberts by the name of Doerr, plus the children married into Rihm, Schaeffer, Heil (Hoyle) Gephart sp?,
and Hershberger. This would be children of Phillip the first.
Philip (1766-1857) (the 2nd in this country) married to Catherine Albert . The farm was in Elizabethtown in Donegal Twp.. Elizabethtown is on the line between Donegal and Mt. Joy townships. Four of their children have their births recorded in the Christ Lutheran Church in Elizabethtown. Solomon's birth records are in Blasser's church, don't know where Leah's is located.
The 3rd Philip in this country is the one that you are searching for. He married a Catharine. It is not always easy to locate people because tax lists weren't taken every year, they were only taxed if they owned a certain amount of acreage or had a certain amount of wealth.
Catharine Hershberger Albert died in 1819 and her husband, Philip Albert, lived on to 1857 and did not remarry.
My understanding was that the 2nd Philip Albert was a minister and that Michael Heichel was an apprentice to him. He then married his daughter. This we haven't been able to prove, the apprenticeship or the fact that Philip Albert was a minister.
The Church records show that Johannes Phillip Albert, 1734-1777 was elected an elder of the Christ Lutheran Church in Elizabethtown in Apr. 1777.
The eldest son of Anna Catharine Albert and Michael Heichel was my ancestor. His name was Joseph Heichel and he left the Luthern Church and became a minister in the Brethren Church.
I have quite a few of the Ashland & Richland County, Ohio, books. I have been going through them and can't find that any Auxer came into those counties at an early date. I think there was only one in Ohio in 1860 and that was Sandusky County, Ohio. The family wasn't settling along with the Albert & Heichel to Ohio.
Can't think of anything else but wanted you to see what information I have and hopefully some of the different names will help you with locations.
Have a fun time researching this week.
