Biography

Effie Mae Alysworth was born March 28, 1875 in Muscatine, Iowa. She died April 11, 1944 in Binghamton, Broome, New York at age 69.

Daughter of William Penn Alysworth (1836-1907) and Mary Ann Lanigan (1851-1909).

1880 United States Census, Fayette, Fayette, Iowa: William P. Aylesworth is head of household, moving building age 48, with wife Mary A. Aylesworth age 28, and children Jerome W. age 7, Effie M. age 5, Ellie R. age 3, and Blanchie A. age 1.

1885 Iowa State Census, Pottawattamie, Iowa: William Aylsworth is head of household, a house mover age 45, with wife Mary Aylsworth, keeping house age 33, and children Jerome U. age 12, Effie M. age 10, Daly age 8, Blanche age 6, and Willie R. age 4.

1895 Iowa State Census, Pottawattamie, Iowa: William Aylesworth is head of household, blind age 55, with wife Mary Aylesworth, keeping house age 42, and children Jerome U., a laborer age 22, Effie M., a dry goods clerk age 20, Rebbe D. age 18, Blanche age 16, and Willie R. age 14.

Effie Mae Alysworth married Archibald Whitelaw on September 15, 1896 in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa. At the time of marriage, Archibald was 32 years old, and Effie was 21.

2. Ethel May Whitelaw was born June 29, 1901 in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa.

1900 United States Census, Kane Township Council Bluffs city Ward 4, Pottawattamie, Iowa: Archibald Whitelaw is head of household, a dry goods merchant age 36, with wife Effie M. Whitelaw age 25.

1910 United States Census, Binghamton Ward 2, Broome, New York: Archibald Whitelaw is head of household, manager of a dry goods store age 45, with wife Effie M. Whitelaw age 34, and children Helen S. age 10, and Eda M. age 8.

1920 United States Census, Broome, New York: Archibald Whitelaw is head of household, treasurer for a department store age 56, with wife Effie Whitelaw age 44, and children Helen age 19, and Eda May age 18.

1930 United States Census, Binghamton, Broome, New York: Archibald Whitelaw is head of household, a dry goods merchant age 65, with wife Effie Whitelaw age 55. Also in the home is their servant, Margaret McDonald, age 32, born in Ireland.

Archibald and Effie lived in Binghamton, Broome, New York but owned sheep farms in Australia.

Obituary

Mrs. Whitelaw Dies at Home

Mrs. Effie Aylesworth Whitelaw, prominent in community affairs for more than three decades, died this morning at her home, 50 Riverside Drive, after and illness of several months.

The widow of Archibald Whitelaw, until his deaath in 1937 vice president of Fowler, Dick & Walker, Mrs. Whitelaw had suffered a heart ailment. She was born in Muscatine, Iowa in 1875.

Mrs Whitelaw is survived by two daughters, Mrs Leon G Kennedy of this city and Mrs. James W. Blewer of Johnstown N. Y.; a brother Jerome Aylesworth of Omaha, Neb; a sister, Mrs. Blanche Overmier of Maryville, Mo; three grandchildren, Miss Barbara Blewre and Archibald and Ann Kennedy.

A member of the Christ Episcopal church. Mrs. Whitelaw was active for many years in several organizations, particularly the American Red Cross and the Binghamton Y.W.C.A. She was a past director in each of the organizations.

A life member and past president of the Monday Afternoon club. Mrs. Whitelaw also was a former member of the board of directors of the House of the Good Shepherd and a member of the Binghamton Garden Club. She was an honorary member of the Girls Club and the Binghamton Civic Club and also a director in the Sixth Judicial District of the New York State Federation of the Women's Clubs.

Mrs. Whitelaw spent many years in mental hygiene work with local and state organizations. In the Red Cross she devoted much time to nutrition work.

The body was removed to the George Scholderer Funeral Home, 269 Chenango Street. The funeral will be at the Whitelaw home at a time to be announced.
