Biography

Elizabeth Andrews was born about 1778 in North Carolina, possibly to Robert Andrew and Elizabeth Patterson.[1] In 1800 she married Samuel Cowden Martin (1776-1854),[2] and it is believed they had 12 children, with these eight named:

  1. Richard Cowden Martin (1801-)
  2. Mary (Polly) Martin, born about 1803
  3. Robert Andrew (Andy) Martin (1807-)
  4. Samuel Gilbert (Gilbey) Martin (1808-)
  5. John Logan Martin, born about 1811
  6. Margaret Teresa (Peggy) Martin, born about 1813
  7. James Pinkney (Jim) Martin (abt.1816-)
  8. Elizabeth Martin, born about 1818

In about 1829, Samuel and Elizabeth moved their family to Wayne County, Missouri, becoming one of the earliest settlers.[3] The area they lived in was later changed to Greene County. This area was not enumerated in the 1830 U.S. Census but they were counted in 1840,[4] living next door to their son Samuel and his family. The young couple with a baby living with them was most likely their son James and his new family.

Samuel and Elizabeth moved to Ozark County, possibly after it was established in 1841.[5] Elizabeth probably passed away there in about 1845.
