In the 1860 US census, Russell (17) was living in Wyandott Township, Kansas Territory, with his mother Lucy Armstrong (43) and siblings Caroline, Henry, Hellan and Martha.[1]
When the Civil War arrived, Russell served in a Kansas regiment. His military service record states that he was a Private in the 3rd Independent Battery, Kansas Light Artillery.[6] His obituary states that his job early in the war was as a mail agent, running from Kansas City to Brookville.

In the 1870 US census, Russel B Armstrong (26) and Rachel B Armstrong (26) were living in Wyandotte Township, Kansas, with son Walter (0).[2]
In the 1880 federal and 1885 state censuses, Russell and Rachel were still in Wyandotte, with children Walter, Wallace, Lucy, Anna Clara, Paul and Ralph.[3][8]
On July 31, 1889, Russell was boarding an elevated train when he slipped and had both legs amputated below the knee due to the injuries.

In the 1900 US census, R B Armstrong (57) and Rachel C Armstrong (57) were living in Wyandotte, Kansas, with children Walter, Lucy, Anna, Clara, Paul and Ralph, and with Tina Armstrong (daughter in law), Wallace Armstrong (granddaughter) and Nellie Olson (ward).[10]
He died on 7 Jun 1901, and was buried at Quindaro Cemetery, Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas, United States.[11][5][4]
