Biography

Hulmul is named among the "first of these heroes" of the Goths by Jordanes[1]

Herwig Wolfram, writing in 1988, [2] stated that Hulmul or Humli-Hulmul, is considered the divine father of the Danish people.

As a divine being, Hulmul does not have a place in human genealogy. As a divine being, Hulmul cannot have parents, spouses or children, and his existence must be considered disproven. See Space: Ostrogoth Rulers for an account of the various linkages given to him in legend.

Research Notes

Birth and Death Estimation

As a divine being, Hulmul does not have a birth year. However, a fictional birth year of 30 in the Common Era having been given to his purported father, Gapt, estimate Hulmul's birth as, say, 60.

The Goths trace their location back to Scandza, a pre-historic location in Scandanavia, and then the tribe moved southward through the Vistula basin in modern Poland and Ukraine and then into the Roman province of Pannonia. As a representative of this migration, place Hulmul's place of birth in Scandza, and his place of death in the Vistula basin.

Line of Descent

Jordanes [1] provides a line of descent for the rulers of the Goths. This line has been repeated and supplemented by Charles Cawley [3]in his medieval lands database. Cawley states that "Nothing is known about the Amal Goth leaders, supposed descendants of Athal, who are shown below apart from the sparse amount of information which has been extracted from Iordanes." [3]

Estimated years of birth are given in 30 year increments beginning with the year 30 of the Common Era, modified by actual dates where available.

  1. Gapt, born, say, 30; no further information. [4] May be the Scandanavian god of war.
  2. Hulmul, son of Gapt, born, say 60. [4] Name may be synonymous with "divine father of the Danish people."
  3. Augis; son of Humul, born, say, 90 [4]
  4. Amal, son of Augus, born, say, 120, from whom the name of the Amali comes. [4]
  5. Hisarnis, son of Amal, born, say, 150.[4]
  6. Ostrogotha, son of Hisarnis, born, say, 180[4]
  7. Hunuil, son of Ostrogotha, born, say 210.[4]
  8. Athal, son of Hunuil, born, say, 240 [4]
