Theodore Atkinson migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640). (See The Great Migration (Series 2), by R. C. Anderson, vol. 1, p. 95) Join: Puritan Great Migration Project Discuss: pgm
Theodore Atkinson was born about 1614, presumably in England. Previously this profile had "Bury, Lancastershire, England" as the place of birth; however, Robert Charles Anderson in his "Great Migration" indicates his place of birth is unknown.[1]
He immigrated to Boston in 1634 as the servant of John Newgate. The Boston Church accepted him as a member on January 11, 1634 when he was about 20 years old.[1][2]
On August 31,1640 he received his first land grant which indicates his term of service to John Newgate had expired. Since he would not have received a land grant while in servitude, the gap between his migration and his land grant is explained since he would not have been granted land while he was a servant. This fact also explains the gap between being admitted to the church and becoming a freeman on May 18, 1642.[2][1]
He was a Feltmaker, hatter, beavermaker and in this way made his living in Boston.[1]
Theodore married Abigail Chambers by about 1642. She was the daughter of Thomas Chambers and his wife Alice. [1][3]
In 1667 he married Mary Wheelwright, who was the daughter of Rev. John Wheelwright and the widow of Edward Lyde. [1][4]

No source has been provided to prove a relationship between Theodore and his alleged brother, Thomas of Concord. Anderson did not make any connection between the two. In Thomas' profile, I included a section to dispute the belief that John Atkinson of Newbury was Thomas' son. The dispute is based on Concord court records that state Thomas had multiple daughters, but make no mention of any son. Any belief that Theodore and Thomas were brothers appears to be based on Thomas' alleged relationship with John of Newbury because John is proved to be Theodore's nephew. This conflicting information has not been addressed within this profile.
