Francis Audley was the son of Sir Henry Audley by his last wife, Anne Daniel. Sir Henry Audley left his estate at Layer to Francis Audley, with reversion to his 2nd son, Henry Audley, who inherited Berechurch.
When Francis Audley died in 1681, the eldest sister, Katharine (Audley) Barker "managed to secure Abberton and the advowson of Layer for her own daughter Appolonia upon her marriage to Francis Canning, of Foxcote. But Henry Audley seized all the Layer land, and, upon the death of mad Thomas [Audley] in 1687, took the tithe [sic] also. In 1693 he went to law with Sir Edward Bettnson, who very properly objected to his describing Blind Knights [Essex] as the manor of Layer-de-la-Haye."
