Military Service, Civil War

William enlisted as a private in Company H, 31st Mississippi Infantry Volunteers on March 13, 1862. This information is from his service file on Fold3.[4]

There is a muster roll through September 1862 that states William was absent without leave. No further records are in the file.

Searched Fold3, NPS, Ancestry, and FS without finding further information.

Note: It may seem that this military record is not for the correct person, as there is no record of Wiliam living in Mississippi. However, he is buried in Madison County Alabama with a brass-lettered military service-style grave marker indicating his service in the 31st Mississippi.

William applied for a pension in Madison County. His application was denied with the explanation "This man is a deserter. Never allow another application from him or through him.[5]

William, son of Heseciah Balch & Toblin Balch, died (age 73) on February 7, 1914, and was buried at Mount Zion Cemetery, Monrovia, Madison County, Alabama.[1]

William's great-grandson applied for the memorial grave marker on January 5, 1976 .[21] The marker was approved and is now at the grave site.
