Biography
Lewis Balch was born on July 7, 1847 in New York County, New York, United States. He was the son of Anna "Nancy" Jay and Rev. Lewis Penn Witherspoon Balch. Lewis' mother died in January 1848, less than a year after his birth. His father subsequently married Emily Wiggin about 1850.
In 1850, Lewis (3) was living with his father Lewis P W Balch (age 36, clergyman), stepmother Emily (age 25), siblings Augusta J (10), Elizabeth (6), and Mary Leadbeater (35, born Ireland), in New York City, New York County, New York, United States. [1]
In 1860, Lewis (13) was living with his father Lewis P W Balch (46), stepmother Emily (43), and eight siblings, in Middletown, Newport, Rhode Island, United States. [2]
Lewis (23) married Jane Byrd Swann (23) (born on September 22, 1847 in Virginia; daughter of Robert Page Swann and Sarah Corlis (Whipple) Potter) on November 2, 1870 in Hartford, Connecticut, United States. They had a son:
