Walter served in the 211 Regiment, 9th (Service) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers in the First World War. [4]

He passed away in 1917, age 24.

Arras (war) memorial War Graves Commission inscription reads: In Memory of Serjeant Walter Harold Ball MM 9th Bn., Royal Fusiliers who died aged 24 on Thursday, 3rd May 1917. Serjeant BALL was the son of William John and Bertha Ball of 2, Brook Cottages, Kingsbridge, Devon. Remembered with honour ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. In the perpetual care of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission [5]

23 September 2014: His name was read out on the 'Roll of Honour' for 'The Tower Remembers'.
