Biography

Elizabeth was born in 1841 in Virginia, according to the 1870, 1880 and 1900 US census records (West Virginia was created in 1863). Her maiden name was given in a number of her children’s records as Ballangee.

She married George W Pile (Piles), probably around 1860 based on the birth of daughter Lucinda around 1861.

They were living in Union, Wayne, West Virginia in the 1870-1900 US census records.

In 1882, her father’s Will was probated and Elizabeth Jane Piles was “not to participate in the property”!

1887 Dec 29 Marriage of Elisha Lowe and Prudence Piles. Elisha was 21. born around 1866. Father: Samuel Lowe. Mother: Mary Lowe. Prudence was 21. Born around 1866. Father: G W Piles. Mother: Elizabeth Piles. ^[1]

Her husband George W died in 1891 leaving her a widow with eleven children. He left her everything in his Will for her to look after until her death, and then to be given to the children. He named her Elizabeth Jane in the will.^[2]

In the 1850 US census, Elizabeth J Ballengee (9), born about 1841 in Pennsylvania, was living in Wayne, Virginia, with parents Absallom Ballengee (42) and Therry Ballengee (39), and siblings Rutha A (16), Levi (14), Eli (11), Phebe (7), Lucina (5), Theny (2) and with Jane Ballengee (32).^[4]

In the 1860 US census, Elizabeth J Ballengee (19), born in Virginia, was living in Wayne, Virginia, with parents Abralan Ballengee (52) and Thena Ballengee (49), and siblings Phebe (17), Lucinda (14), Thena (12), Lawry (9) and Abraham (7).^[5]
