Biography

Sarah was born in 1860. She is the daughter of Alonzo Bampton.

May have married Robert Cross of Hill End, 03 Sep 1874,^[1] but she would be too young then. Perhaps a different Sarah Bampton, though there are not many Bamptons at this time, her mother died around 1890-91 and she lived on Keppel st, Bathurst at the time, where this Sarah's brother lived in 1906.

Married to A. Johnson of Sydney in (and before) 1906.^[2] Perhaps this is the 'Johnson' mentioned in the above divorece proceedings.

Bathurst Free Press and Mining Journal (NSW : 1851 - 1904 VAGRANCY. James Robert Cross, aged 12 years, was charged under the Industrial Schools' Act with having no lawful means of support. Mr. Webb appeared for the friends of accused. Sergeant Morris deposed to arresting the lad on the charge named ; at the last Circuit Court he was charged with killing his own father ; the jury brought in a verdict of not guilty and the prisoner was discharged ; he had since been staying with an aunt who could not afford to keep him, and the present course was adopted ; he was without protection and had no visible lawful means of support or fixed place of abode ; his mother had been divorced from her husband for four or five years, and had not acknowledged communications sent to her. Mr. Webb said that it was on the suggestion of his Honor, Judge Windeyer, that these steps were taken, and the lad was anxious to go to the Vernon. The Bench were empowered to send him to the Industrial School under the circumstances. Sarah Cross, wife of Robert Cross, deposed that by marriage accused was her nephew ; her husband lived at Hill End, and allowed her 20s a week ; she had five children to support on this, and found it impossible to keep this child in addition to her own : the lad was anxious to go to the Industrial School ; unless he is sent there witness can not support him, and he would have to wander about the streets. The Bench ordered him to be sent to the training ship Vernon.
