Biography

Elizabeth was born on 23 Jan 1821 presumably in Washington County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Reuben Bayless and Elizabeth Moore.

Marriage and Children

Elizabeth married Arthur Taylor in Washington County, Tennessee in approximately 1840,^[1] although no marriage record for them has been found to date. In the Census of 1840 Elizabeth was no longer living with her family of origin, so the stated date of marriage common on so many historians' trees stands to reason. Their children were as follows:

1. Reuben Moore Taylor, 1840-1880
2. Elizabeth Seraphina (Taylor) Poindexter Sperry, 1842-1874
3. Thomas J. Taylor, 1846-Deceased

It should be noted that there are three other children who some historians have attached as children, but none of these three were found in records to link them to the parents and I do not believe they are children of Arthur or Elizabeth. Nevertheless, they are as follows: Sarah Ellen Taylor (born in Indiana and not ever in any census with them), Jane H. Taylor (only source on FS is link to ancestry.com with nothing on these parents), and Frances L. Taylor (only source on FS is link to ancestry.com with nothing on these parents).

Residences

(1830) Washington County, Tennessee. Elizabeth would have been between age 9 and 10 during this Census. Reuben, her father, is listed as aged 40-50, one female 40-50 (Elizabeth, her mother). Others listed were 2 males under 5 (brothers Samuel and Hezekiah), 1 male 5-10 (brother Reuben M.), 1 male 10-15 (brother William), 1 male 15-20 (brother Asa), 1 female 5-9 (sister Rachel was about 5), and 2 females 10-14 (Elizabeth and sister Alice). ^[2]

(1840) No record has been found to date for Elizabeth or husband, Arthur Taylor.^[3]

(1850) Washington County, Tennessee. Elizabeth Taylor (28-birth year estimated 1822) with husband, Arthur (34), Reuben (10), Elizabeth (8). All are listed as having been born in Tennessee. ^[4] Sometime between 1850 and 1860, Elizabeth and her family, as well as siblings Sarah, Franklin, Hezekiah, Rachael, and Alice moved from Tennessee to Missouri.

(1860) Sonora, Atchison, Missouri. Elizabeth (39) with Arthur (43), Reuben (20), and Thomas J. Taylor (14). All are listed as having been born in Tennessee. ^[5]

(1870) Nishnabotna, Atchison, Missouri. Elizabeth (50), Arthur (54)(farmer), Reuben (31)(farmer), and grandchildren (children of Elizabeth Seraphina) James Poindexter (12) and Edmona Poindexter (9). This was taken on 20 July 1870. James and Edmonia are also found in the Census of 1870 on 23 Jul 1870 living with their mother, Elizabeth Seraphina and her new husband, Mortimer Frederick Sperry in Nishnabotna. ^[6]

(1880) Polk, Atchison, Missouri. Elizabeth (54), Arthur (64), and granddaughter (daughter of Elizabeth Seraphina, deceased) Mattie Sperry (13). It is stated that Elizabeth's father was born in Tennessee and mother born in South Carolina. (See her mother's profile for inconsistencies regarding her place of birth).^[7]

Death and Burial

She passed away in Atchison County, Missouri on 14 Apr 1891 at the age of 70 yrs 2 months 22 days. She is buried in Linden Cemetery in Watson, Atchison, Missouri. FAG and many historians have her date of birth as 22 Jan 1821, but on two different online calculators for her date of birth, using date of death and age at death, the date given for birth is 23 Jan 1821. ^[8]
