Biography

Birth

John William Beahan was born on 19 December 1899 to Thomas Alen [sic] and Sarah E. (Hull) Beahan in St. Louis, MO, USA. His father, an auctioneer, was entered in the 1900 U.S. census as being born in Missouri, but in the 1920 census his birth place is registered as England and his mother, in Missouri. John was the youngest child of seven siblings: Oliver, Lillian, Thomas, Orville, Albert, and Elmer.[1][2][3]

Marriage

John William Beahan and Gertrude Josephine Vagadas were married in or near St. Louis, MO, before 21 February 1918, their daughter Dorothy's date of birth. They later had a son, Jack, born between 1920-1922. Their marriage was not successful and John did not have a good relationship with his children and had little to no contact with either throughout the remainder of his life.[4] While John's marriage to Gertrude ended in divorce after 1921, but before 1930, marriage dissolution records have not been located to determine an exact date.[5]

He then remarried prior to 1930, Mary E. (last name unknown), as indicated on the U.S. 1930 census, however, marriage records have not been located.[5]

Notable Events

On 5 June 1917, John (now preferring to be called Jack) enlisted in the U.S. Army and served two years, with the rank of corporal, when he was honorably discharged from service on 19 February 1919.[6][1] Following WW I, John was employed as a chauffer and later, between 1930 and 1940, as a sewing machine salesman. In 1945, during WW II, he registered for the draft at age 41, but does not appear to have served active duty. [7][5][8]

By 1930, he and his second wife were living in Lakeland, Polk County, Florida, where he lived for the remainder of his life.[1]" Following at least 12 years of marriage, they had one daughter, circa 1943, named Lanna.[9]

Death

John/Jack William Beahan died 8 January 1975 in Polk County, Florida. He is interred at Oak Hill Burial Park, Lakeland, Polk County, Florida, USA. His Find A Grave Memorial ID number is: 75568895.[10]

Research Notes

While John William alternately used the name Jack William or JW on various documents, additional research would be beneficial to definitively confirm the use of the various names. These appear to be the same individual, however, as the dates and places of birth and death are the same, the occupation and place of employment are identical, as is the name of the second wife. It is also known by living family members that "John" had a daughter named Lanna Moon Beahan, who was born circa 1943. His son by his first marriage was also named John William, but used the preferred name of Jack, as well.[4] The 1940 U.S. Federal Census lists his name as Jack W. (see citation), whereas the 1942 City Directory entry reads (available only at Ancestry.com): Beahan John W (Mary) slsmn Singer Sewing Machine Co h1249 Oak Hill Dr.

John stated in the 1920 U.S. census that his father was born in England and his mother in Missouri. In the 1900 and 1910 U.S. censuses, however, John's father Thomas indicates his place of birth as Missouri and Sarah, his wife, as being born in Illinois. Further research is needed to clarify the birth locations for both Thomas A. and Sarah E. Beahan.

The information regarding John's WWI enlistment from the following source is only available on Ancestry.com. The records were neither available on FamilySearch nor on the Beneficiary Identification Records Locator Subsystem (BIRLS) Death File website.
