Obituary

As he was a notable radiologist, his obituary was published in the British Journal of Radiology [3].

Born in 1886, he spent his schooldays at the Royal Academical Institution at Belfast, and passed on to the University of that city, obtaining the B.A. degree in Arts in 1907. He then entered the Faculty of Medicine and, finding his life's work, became a brilliant student. In the final examination for the M.B., Ch.B. he obtained the first place and was accorded first-class honours. In the war years that followed Beath served with the R.A.M.C.(S.R.) as a battalion officer, ambulance train officer, and radiologist to No. 18 C.C.S., B.E.F. Later he was transferred to a hospital ship for service in the Middle East. When demobilised in 1919, with the rank of major, he came to London for a time, taking the M.B., B.S. He had decided to specialise in radiology, and with this object in view he became assistant radiologist to the Military Hospital at Shepherd's Bush. Here he worked under the late Stanley Melville, with whom he formed a deep friendship. In 1920 he returned to his native city, and settled down to consultant practice. In 1921 he was appointed Honorary Radiologist to the Royal Victoria Hospital.
