Hi Derek,

My research has led me to this as well. I am a descendant of the Cornish Bews/Bewes in Lanivet. I have reason to believe it may be true as I have found Scottish DNA in my analysis and no idea where that may have come from. I was trying the figure how William could have met Mary and concluded that perhaps he was enlisted in the Napoleonic wars or perhaps may have been on a fishing boat, which may have resulted in him travelling to Plymouth. Impossible to tell!

Cheers Jane

Hi Jane

Apologies for the delay in replying. Got 'bogged down' with other things! The fishing boat theory is certainly a possibility....I had wondered about that myself. Not so sure about the Napoleonic Wars idea. My understanding is that the vast majority of Scots looked upon that as an English war against Scotland's long term French allies so no enthusiasm to get involved. Many Orkney fishermen were in fact captured and 'press-ganged' into joining the navy so I daresay that may have happened here. I'm more inclined to think this William Bews has become confused with one of the Cornwall people of the same name. I guess we'll never know!

Best wishes

Derek

North Isles Family History site suggests that William Bews may have married a Mary Ellery in 1812 in Cornwall, and died in 1838 at Lanivet, Cornwall. Family Search site also shows their marriage but this seems highly unlikely to me so not input in Wikitree until positive proof is uncovered. Scotland's People shows several more likely marriages of a Willam Bews in Orkney from that time. (dbews 15/02/2021)
