Biography

Lewis was born October 15, 1896, in New York City. His father was Lyman O Bills, who had come from rural Vermont to work in New York City. His mother was Honora Cunningham Bills, who had immigrated to New York from Ireland. He moved to Windham County VT with his parents and two sisters, Helen and Viny, about 1898. A third sister, Violet, was born in Stratton VT in 1900. After her birth, the family settled on a farm on the southeast slope of Newfane Hill, Vermont. Additional siblings born there were Onnie (1904), Lyman S (1910) and Kathleen (1913). In 1917 Lewis married Inez Cherrie whose family lived on the northwest side of Newfane Hill. Lewis and Inez had five sons. The first-born, Lewis Cherrie Bills, died in infancy.

Lewis Cunningham Bills died 5 Jun 1958 at Grace Cottage Hospital in nearby Townshend and was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Newfane.
