Newspaper report: 9 October 1862, Birmingham Daily Gazette. 'ALLEGED THEFT AT HOLDER'S CONCERT HALL. -- Charles William Baxter, 31, jeweller, a well-dressed man, was indicted for stealing, on the 22nd of September, a watch from the person of Joseph Jackson. [...] I appeared that on the night in question the prosecutor and a girl named Kimber were leaving Holder's Concert Hall, when he felt his watch go. He saw something bright in the prisoner's hand, and observed him pass it to another man. Prosecutor challenged him with stealing his watch, upon which the prisoner said, "Take mine." All this the prosecutor swore before the magistrates, but he now materially altered his statement, and evidently sought to screen the accused, and it was elicited from him that he had been in communication with his friends.-- The jury, after some consultation, returned a verdict of guilty.-- The prisoner was further indicted for a former conviction, and pleaded guilty.-- Detective-sergeant Mountford said he apprehended the prisoner and "Jew Harris" for burglary. They were both burglars of the worst description, and prisoner's real name was Bisp.-- The court sentenced him to penal servitude for ten years'.

DEATH REPORT. We regret to have to record the death of Mr Charles Baxter which occurred at the residence of his sister-in-law Mrs. James Orr in Marine Terrace on Sunday morning last. Mr. Baxter was an old and respected resident of Northampton where for a number of years he carried on business as a butcher. Mr. Baxter's death was caused by inflamation of the lungs supervening upon an acute attack of the dread influenza. The funeral took place on Monday morning, the body being interred in the Weslyan Cemetery, the Rev. J. N. Mills officiating. Mr. Baxter was the son-in-law of Mrs. Orr senr. of Geraldton.
DEATH REPORT CORRECTION. WE are requested by the relict of the late Charles Baxter to correct the following errors in the paragraph in our last issue in connection with the death of the deceased. The sad event did not occur at Mrs. James Orr, but at his wife's mother's Mrs. Thomas, Marine Terrace, he having been married to his widow on the 31st December, 1878, at the Gwalla Church, by the Rev. T. Bird, and was therefore not brother-in-law to Mrs. James Orr at the time of his decease.
